Unit 3 - Chapters 3 & 4

Site Specifications:

Core goals (2-3): Provide information in English regarding settling into Mitaka-shi, Tokyo, Japan. Provide information regarding services available to international students of International Christian University. Provide information regarding customs and life in Japan for international students.

Intent: to provide information to International Christian University (ICU) international students on living in Mitaka, Tokyo. Policy direction will be toward directing information towards international students.

Major design or technical features: A chat box for people to leave information and advice for students. This will be read regularly and useful information will be incorporated into the content of the webpage. A simple top navigation system and left navigational bar will guide visitors around the site.

Mission of the organization: to make transitioning to International Christian University less traumatizing and confusing for new international students. Website purpose to support the mission: to reach the international students once they have decided to enter ICU.

Primary Audience: future ICU international students. After visiting the site, the audience should be able to settle in and set his affairs in order.

Success will be measured by traffic with each section having its own traffic counter to determine the usefulness of each category. If some people find the information useful, they spread the site by word of mouth.

The finished site will hopefully be handed over and maintained by the ICU Welcoming Committee. The committee already produces a booklet for living in Japan, but much of the information is in Japanese instead of English, which would be more helpful for international students. This particular structure was chosen for its easy guidance to each section. Sub-categories are clearly labeled.

Explanation of Flow Chart

Each from the top page, the user will be able to determine which grouping of information will be more useful for the user. By linking directly to each section from the top page, the user will be able to quickly find the information he needs. From Required Registrations, the first step a person must take is to complete Alien Registration. Only after that can the person will complete the necessary National Health Insurance procedures. Once the user reads the information, they will need to go to the location where they can register, which is the civil office. Thus, links were created through that organization. Following that, a new resident to the area will most likely need to know how to register for a cellphone, which requires many bureaucratic procedures related to registrations. Other bureaucratic procedures inclue the re-entry permit which is related to traveling. Thus, that section follows closely after. Money issues of Insurance and Banking follow. Finally, less immediate issues such as Emergencies and Transportation and linked to.
This flow structure suits my audience as they will need to do many of the procedures in steps. This puts it together for them in an easy to understand process.
